Kris, pre PPM numbers averaged around 4, then took a sudden jump to average of 11-12 PPM, but ranged from 9-17 depending on the oil sample.

According to my digital calipers, the diameter of the thrust bearing is exactly 0.735 inches. I thought it was bigger than that too, but the curviture is difficult to see on such a small piece of metal.

Yeah, there were several pieces missing from the thrust bearing. They could be floating around anywhere, or been small enough to get sucked up by the pickup screen and trapped by the filter long ago. I think I may go for a quick oil change (even though this stuff is pretty fresh right now) and check the bottom of my oil pan with a flexible magnet for any more signs of loose metal.

Can the oil pan be removed without lifting engine ? I'm sure gasket is starting to leak anyway.

Unfortunately, no. Bad design on Ford's part. And the gasket on the oil pan is not leaking at all.

Take a big magnet, rub it under the bottom of the pan, dragging it towards the plug each time. Hopefully if there is anything there, it will catch it, and pull it towards the plug and stick to the magnet.

Oil's changed. Did what you suggested too, Kris. All magnets came back clean, which is a relief. I did take a sample of the oil as well to see what will happen to my wear metal numbers.

That Looks like it could be from the oil pump or a bearing

Pretty sure it's from an old turbo that was thrashed. Did you see my earlier post comparing them? It's post #53 in this thread.

you can also leave a magnet attached like on the automatic transmissions and check on the next oil change.

The factory drain plug already has a magnet in it.

True. I did not know this until I found this piece of metal on it. There's never been any signs of metal on it before, so I assumed it was not magnetic. My assumption was incorrect.
