Howdy all, I after several months and a few setbacks, I finally found a running I-6 300 (from an 84 f-150) to go in my 71 F-100. I went ahead and removed the smog pump and other "needless" accessories, but I have one lingering problem...NO POWER!
The first time I took her out on the road, she crapped out after only 30 miles, but ran cool though. I did some investigating and decided to switch out my coil, cap, rotor, points and condenser (for posterity) and BAM! Runs nice and smooth, starts right up, all that good stuff. My problem, however...
NO FREAKING POWER!!!! I mean it, tops out at 75 (totally unloaded) and sounds like its about to throw a rod or something! The timing seems to be good, and I bought a new carb before installing the engine. I also use 89 octane gas.
If anyone has any ideas as to how to troubleshoot and/or remedy this problem, I sure would appreciate it.
it's a 300!! they wern't ment for big power.if ya wana run a 100 throw a big block in there but then ya wont get no mpg's. but i spose ya could try an new set of timing gears for a early 70's truck swap to the dura spark ignition, swap out the old intake that dont have all the pulation junk on it. that would be a good start. what rear end gears ya got?
nah, i dont think so. at 70 mph mine is at around 3000 rpms. these trucks werent made to top out much. they are geared to tow a trailer up a hill. so the rpms are definitely way up there, but not going to hurt the motor. in your head you might be thinking its doing 4000 rpms, but after purchasing and installing a cheap tachometer, you can actually see your rpms and see that thats hardly the case.

That sounds like a 3.54 rearend to do those RPMs. I went even cheaper and just ran a timing light I had into the cap of my truck.
Now... if your ratio is similar, you should be able to push higher than 75 easily. I have a tired 240 that I've never topped out, but know could at least pull 85-90 without sounding too much like a screamer. The nice thing is the engine will probably protect itself just with valve float or being limited by the points even if it is capable of reaching higher revs.
Yeah, but shouldnt it go faster than 75 without sounding like its gonna blow up?
Check and see what the gear ratio is in the rear. If it's like a 4.10 ratio that poor little 300 is screaming! The 300" six was made for building good torque numbers at low rpm and hauling a reasonable load, not screaming down the highway at triple digits!!!!!
