upcoming cold weather

I drew a central Wyoming deer tag this year and have a hunting trip scheduled for the 15th of Oct. I dont know how could it will get up there but with wind chill I imagine it will be pretty cold(probably not bad for you Alaska boys). What should I do to keep my truck running good since I wont be able to plug it in at night for nine days? How cold would it have to be to gell? Thanks, elkarcher

Wind chill is irrelevant. It only determines how FAST an object loses heat. It has no effect on the actual temperature.

Having said that, I've had no trouble starting my 05 PSD after sitting all night at -15F without the heater plugged in as long as I'm using Stanadyne in every tank.

I'm facing the same thing for my first time. Elk for me though. It looks like we could see some weather in the upper 20's. Of course anything could happen. I plan to just use the Powerservice fuel conditioner in the white bottle. I normally use the gray bottle stuff, so there's no real penalty for me to just switch over to white bottle while I'm there. I don't expect anything that would require plugging in the block heater. I'm more worried about the tanks freezing on the travel trailer.

What deer area do you have? I'll be in Elk area 120 which is west of Casper, near the town of Waltman. Opener is the 9th for us, so we'll be a week earlier than you.

Good luck with the bucks and the trucks.

Bill

Well your heading up to my territory, Right now its getting into the 30s at night, but by the 15th things could definatly change for the worse or better. I would just run some 5-40 synthetic and keep a fuel additive in your tank. Helps to keep your tank full as well. Ive started mine in the -10s and it started fine. It wont be that cold though. Good luck on the hunt!

My cousin went on a trip w/ his sled. said it was -15 and the truck started fine. He said he turned the key on and off 5 or 6 times to warm the glow plugs, he also said it sounded like someone shaking a box of bolts until it was warmed up! I have been plowing with him and his truck for years. This is my first winter up here in NY with a diesel too!

You are in Rock Springs IIRC. I'll be going right through there on I-80.

I'm not planning to change oil just for the trip so I'll be running 15-W40 conventional. The manual says it's preferred down to +30F, and acceptable down to +10F. Plus it says to use the 15-W40 for towing which I will be doing. Hopefully that will work out okay. Stupid manual is not clear on what you should do if you tow in less than +10F temps.

Just so you know that glow plug lamp has no real indication of actually glow plug on time, this is controlled by the glow plug module and they do not require any more key cycles than the initial it all works of the engine oil temp and the glow plug module commands them off after 120seconds..yes even when the engine is running..

I drew a region E tag and will be hunting on some property in the Jeffery City area(north of Rawlins). My buddy has been up there on the property filming quite a few bucks in the 30" + range so it is looking pretty good. Thanks for the reply and go get yourself an awsome bull!
