glowplug harness service

ok so after the pin point test ive done on the glow plug system ive determined its the harness. (test light from test terminal to glowplug leads, no light).

so the pin pinot test say to service or replace the harness, and since the only part of the harness that is borked, is the glowplug leads (that i can see) id rather see if i can somehow fix this problem myself.

has this ever happend to anyone here before? where does the harness connect with the rest of the system? I cant see the problem being the leads themselvs since all of them are suposedly gone. maybe i have a loose connection somewhere?

cold starts have been haunting me for a while and id really like to fix this problem since i might soon be moving to a colder climate.

thanks, peace.

Harness rebuild

DieselRunner

I'm about as far as your gonna get from an expert on this list, but I do have my GP harness fully exposed for other work that I am doing. The leads from the GP's tie together at a common point to a fusable link in the shielded assembly that runs down each side of the engine just above the valve covers. The small leads that actually connect to the GP's on my engine are a 0.150" "Bullet" connector that I plan to replace as well.
The fusable link is much larger, looks to me like it might be 10 ga. or there abouts. It goes back to the GP controller.
Lots of places for problems. With my engine, I am thinking that the difficult cold starts were a bad mix of symptoms, air intrusion in the fuel system was obvious with mine.

FWIW

Check your harness and you will find anything of the fusible link sections bad. The wire will stretch or well the insulation will cause the link is melted. The fusible link size should be 2mm which is 12 gauge per plug. Then they are bundled together to a regular wire that goes to the relay. Or that is how my older 80's harness is made. The 90's model 7.3's may be constructed alittle bit different but the link does the same job.

Link is cheap and easy to repair.

if i remember correctly a fusable link is just a thin bit of wire that melts if it get too hot.
so is that what i should be looking for?

and if they are gone? what then, can i replace that little piece with another piece of wire? did you say there was eight fusable links?

thanks.

Fuse link is gauged as far as the size of the wire as regular wire. It is made out of a different type of wire. It is coated with a coating that generally will not melt through and to find a bad link all you have to do is pull on the wires and the open link will stretch like a rubber band. You can replace just that piece but replace it with link.

Fuse links are needed is this type of circuit because link can take some abuse as far amp draw but if there is a real problem it will let go. A fuse on the other hand will usually pop with any amount of surge. That is what they are supposed to do.

If you ever have link melted you want to replace that with link when you fix the problem.

Factory Replacement

Here's another option. Shop Diesel has the factory harness, puts you back to new condition.

http://shop.ivalueinternet.com/shopdiesel/index.cfm/action/productdetail/product_id/479.htm

$130 plus freight.

I'm sure your local International dealer can get the same.

Best.
