Good day to all,
Considering taking a job that will move me to SanDiego, I currently live in no smog required South Texas. I have an 86 F150 300 bored .40 over, with a crane cam and the stock single barrel carb. truck runs great and I did all the work my self and would hate to have to get rid of it. My question is for the SO cal people or anyone who is smog smart HAHA. How hard is it to get one of the I6 engines to pass the smog test for that area? The engine is not a california engine, it does have an air pump that pumps to the cats and the two cats are still in place. All the emissions stuff that it came with new is still there and to the best of my knowledge its still functioning. Is there a place that can test to the California standards? Well any input would be great. Thanks
Joe
My guess would be that you'd be OK, the Clean Air act was passed in '90 and you're truck is probably grandfathered in as passing, as long as you don't have anything seriously wrong with your emissions system.
If you do not meet Calif smog standards for the type of vehicle and year your screwed, even if it's a out of state vehicle it must meet our standards for the same vehicle here in Calif.
Well I am hoping that it will pass when the time comes. All systems are still in place. Thanks for the info. May be I'll look for a smog place up north and see how it does just to get the bench mark. Take it easy
To smog here, you pass at the pipe and inspection.
If your external stuff is all there, you will pass inspection. Did you fool with the timing? Mine specs at 10 degrees and they check, along with pcv, cats, carb, wiring to sensors, fuel leaks, thermostatic air cleaner, egr visual, air pump, vac lines, fuel cap (buy a new one) evap system, spark controls, oxygen sensor, and anything else they see.
Next is pass at pipe. My '85 passes so far under the max that I think you could pass with a stuck float and no oil rings or so it seems.
If you can get smog numbers there you can check against these numbers. Keep in mind this is for an '85. Not sure if they tightened it for '86 but they probably did. But, lots of wiggle room. Mine is stock with 79000 miles, doesn't run perfectly but here are the numbers:
15 mph/1958 rpm HC ppm max 129, mine 51//CO% max .84 mine .05// NOppm max 1076, mine 846.
25 mph/1956 rpm HC ppm max 101, mine 44//CO% max 1.06 mine .04// NOppm max 1103, mine 928.
Your cam might give you trouble on HC maybe, but if your cats are working, CO and NO should be ok.
My smog guy told me he would pass me with efi exhaust manifolds, if I ever get to it...he says, ..."if the part says 'Ford',..." it was ok with him.
Good luck.
If you like San Diego, never leave, as once you go, no one will ever let you move back..
Thanks, That is exactly what I was looking for. The only thing missing is the warm air tube for the choke housing, I live in a very warm climate so it was just a pain when I put everything back together and it was rusted and broke. I read on a thread that it would be fine without it and so far it is. Thanks for the numbers. Most places say they can check but they dont know to what standards. San diego is great and its a nice place. I love the climate and there are plenty things to do. Thanks again.
Joe
