Hi, I have a 1988 F250 that had a 302 in it but it we swapped it a year ago for a 351. The head gasket and many other places are starting to leak so we thinks it time to pull it and rebuild the engine. I was wondering what is the best way to get some reliable power out of it without spending over 1500 rebuilding the engine. I would like to hear some combinations that you guys have tried out. Also, I have a second car I drive but my dad and i would like to finsih this before plow season in a few months so would you reccomned buying an running engine to rebuild and then just swap them out?
run compcam 35-255-5, long tube headers with customer y pipe and 3" exhaust running out stock location. is your tranny a 5speed or auto. this combo will give you reliability and a good bump in performance.
Depending on how much of a gain you want you get you might want look into a better intake. The truck intakes are practical but are not very performance oriented. I defintely agree on the cam and exhaust upgrade.
the efi edelbrock truck intake would be a good option or a lightning gt40 upper/lower, only problem is the cost involed in either which would put him out of his budget i think. starting with these other upgrades first then look into more.
also what size tires are you running and what gear ratio is in that f250? this makes a big difference
The stock truck 5.8 intake is actually very well matched to the motor and the intended engine powerband.. idle to 4000rpm. It will flow enough air to provide a substantial boost in power over this range with a cam upgrade. If you want more upper rpm HP, the GT40 or other car style intakes are what you want, but low rpm TQ will suffer. The Edelbrock truck intake does not make much difference on a near stock 5.8 according to one of the moderators here that tried it, lots of $$ for not much gain.
I already have shorty headers, k and n intake kit, and flowmaster dual 2 1/4 inch cat back. I have 315/70-16 tire and running the stock 4.10 gears. The truck has the E4OD and I really dont wanna go to 4.56 gears so i will still be able to go down the highway.
315's isnt that a 35" tire? 4.56 gears with that size tire would put you 70mph at 2000rpms roughly. also you should getting the exhaust redone from the headers to the catback. that is were the bottle neck is. a catback does nothing but gain sound, no performance there im afraid.
So if I get GT 40 iron heads what would i have to change on the set up I have now? Also what cam should I run with that and should I run the stock intake. Will I need larger injectors too get the full potential out of this combo as well?
