I have a 65 f100...it had originally a i 6 ...then someone put in a c7me-a destroked 427 to 390....cracked block when I bought it. sucks....so. Im looking for a engine... i keep finding 302, 351, 460s, and 360s for the money. the 390s i find are usually already rebuilt and expensive. I found a 460 truck 4x for sale for cheap....but wasnt sure how to get the 460 into the 65. or for that matter of fact...anything other than the 390. My tranny is a c6 for the 390. which sucks cause the bellhousing limits me to an fe block. so that means new tranny if I go with anything else. Any one have any ideas or engines for sale?! Im sort of at a lose right now. trying to figure out what is best for the truck.
It is not hard to make the changes to put in any ford motor you just need the apropriate mounts and crossmember for the tranny. Going away from an FE does mean a different trans also. The truck frame and crossmember is the same for all available engines up through 79. If you find a cheap donor with the engine you want get all the stuff that mounts it in the donor. Then you can bolt it into yours. The only variable left is the drive shaft. Good Luck and happy hunting, Rich.

That would be a little tough to do in a 65 there Flashman..........Whole wrong chassis....More prefered would be a stout 300 six.
How do you destroke a 427 to 390 as they use the same stroke crank and same rods? the 427 uses a whopping 4.23 bore to the 390's 4.050.
Or even if it is the 428s 4.13" bore? That i can see with some slopply slappy .060 over pistons and a 390 crank n rods. Is the block cross bolted? Is there a balance weight behind the harmonic balancer. cmon' show and tell...
If its not cross bolted its not a 427.
If it don't have the added hatchet weight its not an external balance 428.
haha! lord I dont know... All I know is what is stamped on the block.
C7me-a for all I know it could be a 428? The guy told me it was a 352.
but it had a tag on the engine that said ford 390. but the block stampings
pointed to 428....I didnt buy the truck for the engine...lol. it looked like a peice of doo and had plans of replacing it from the get go.... especially after I found out it had a crack. A guy at the local autozone said they used to destroke those engines for some reason... so that is what I assumed...lol like I said I grew up a chevy guy. 305 327 350 454 or 502 ... where an engine was what it was. so this FE thing is wierd to me. but ...none the less. are some cool motors.
I heard of using 332 FE cranks but it's antiquated "Hot Rodding" technology for being here in the 21st century & 7th year of our 3rd millennium of the Modern era. NO that's NOT A Misprint 0001 thru 0999 was 1st, 1000 thru 1999 was 2nd now here we are in 2007, 7th year of the 3rd minnennium.
I concur with John & Garbz, somebody besides "the Col." is confused here. Somebody has been telling tall tales for sure. . . The remedy is really very simple here 65 Fordguy,
Get an early 70s 460, with right C-6 A/T, & install it in your 65 F Series using mid to late FoMoCo F-Series, 460 powered, OEM/script, truck, parts. Next upgrade your rear gear to suit great new 460 source of power, and start to get good fuel mileage too (providing engine is set up & tuned right, of course).
I think the person who put the "sales tales" on you was either misinforned or uninformed at best. However that does not tank the deal, IMHO. You can join the rest of us who brought our Slick 60s trucks into the 21st century by upgrading technology & creature comforts into 3rd millennium Standards. I have been running 460's for years and I'm not turning back!
PS
Garbz, Maybe he could put a 223 in the bed to please the Col.
Either way, one half or a dozen, all manufacturers use the same engine block for multiple strokes for a length of time. For instance a 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 are all chevy small blocks that share the same thing, block design. There are a few revisions that happened with each new increase in CID. The FE is the same way. You have the 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, and 428. Most parts interchange with minimal effort minus boring the cylinders. So as you see it isn't that hard to figure them out if you have the right info.
As far as the lifter valley crack in your current block, you may be able to get away with stop drilling and a bandaid depending on where the crack is. If it runs through an oil passage that will be a show stopper. But as said above check with a good machine shop to see what they say.
