Anyone tried putting a Y-block in a 48-52? I like my flattie now, but I'm thinking about a Y-block later on down the road (i'd normally go with a 302, but I kind of want to keep this truck as 50's to early 60's hot rod correct as I can).
I found a 292 out of a '59 Edsel in the paper for cheap the other day, and it got me to thinking..
I have a friend with a 53. He has a Y-block out of a 62 (?) galaxy. He has headers, dual exhaust, and a big 4 barrel of some sort. It is the 3 speed on the column (not sure what it is from). The 9" rear has 2.something gears. That thing will fly on the highway.
I was running 55 MPH (in my truck) and he was behind me going down the road. He stomped his and flew past me like I was sitting still. I was impressed.
I have not been in the truck to know how it does around town. I am hoping to meet up with him this winter and trade rides.
My '49 F5 has a 292 Yblock from a Tbird (pretty sure that was it's origin.. was in the truck when I got it). The Y-block will bolt right up to the tranny, which is nice. You will have to remote mount the oil filter, and you may have clearance issues on the oil pan itself. Don't go with the stock headers (crossover tube on the front of the block).
