tie rod end

i hate to be the new guy who is asking questions before helping to build up a reputation, but i am stuck in a bad place... so i did some screwing around after work today, got my 89, f250 4x4 stuck in some clay mud, walked about 3km to find someone to pull me out, did that, on the way back to the hiway, driving down the dirt road, went over a good bump, and shot to the left violently, scared the **** out of me, noticed that i was headed straight for a tree, saw this just intime for my hood to open up on me... flap up and down as i go through the ditch, pop back down to see me go through the tree, (luckly it was more bush than i thought it was...) to skid to a halt! looking underneath it, the right tierod end is worn through, the ball part is still attached to the hub, the rod is still attached to the steering box..., and the rod is dangling on the ground...

so basicly, i'm wondering how hard it is to change this part, it's a nice tall truck so i'm not really worried about clearance, it's in the middle of nowhere, is this something i can easily change in a day? and what tools do i need to expect to take with me out there?my haynes manual has nothing on tierod ends in it... oddly enough... any advice/knowledge would be GREATLY appreciated, as i've only even seen one of these done once, and that was back when i was in highschool i'm thinking a pair of plyers for the cotterpin, a socket set and a ball joint "tuning fork"? i'm not sure if i need the last one or not though

or you can get yourself a nice big hammer, DON'T hit the stud. Just hit the side of the spindle by the tie rod bore perpendicular to the joint a few times and it'll pop it out. Works every time.

yeah it came right off, didn't realize the pickle fork pry's on the socket side of the joint, and not the recess between the stud and the ball... so it did no good for me, what i did was heated it up with a propane torch, then hit the top of the stud downwards, took a few hits but it worked... i have to change the rest of them when i get back from this weekend, they all seem like they are junk...

is it worth it to buy the TRW ones for like 80$ vs the import tiwan brand for 25-30? i bought the truck for 460$, it's got 311000 km on it and my plan for it is 4x4ing...

how big of tires? You get what you pay for, how important is your steering? You got lucky the first time and missed any big trees....
