resonators.....what do they do? (besides the obvious)

i have a xterra, i came across something that some xterra knowledgable people said can get some extra power out of it.

they said just disconnect 2 resonators and plug the whole on the intake, get some MAS cleaner and clean the MAS, and install a drop in k&n filter and it would gain about 6hp on a 180? hp engine.

i was just going to try all of it exceopt for the expensive filter just because i like tinkinering with things, but i do not know any real effects of a resonator or if it realistically would help with power if taken out of the system.

i just don't want to buffoon my car up over something stupid, or waste my time totally.

I'm assuming you're talking about that plastic thing that's supposed to quiet the intake noise. I don't know how much of a gain you would get, but on a 5.0 Mustang it is supposedly worth 7-10 hp. I don't know if it really made that much of a difference on mine, but it sounded better. That's worth a couple of horses, right?

Oh, if you're talking about intake resonators...they're just to quiet down intake noise.

Apparently federal regs have some pretty strict standards on factory intake noise, although I don't really understand why.

I thought K&N claimed that much horsepower increase by just changing to their filter.

i don't know what k&n claims, but i am not going to spend the money for it anyway, unless it costs near as much as a stock replacement (which i doubt).

alright, heck with it, i will just cut the resonators out of the system, i am looking more of an excuse to tinker with my ride.

what about that MAF?/MAS? sensor? is there suppose to be a "special" cleaner just for it?

I have been told to use choke and carb cleaner, but I have not tried it. I have never seen a special cleaner for the sensor.

The power they advertise is at wide open throttle where extra air can be utilized (in some engines). For "normal" driving conditions there is no shortage of air and the stock system provides all that is needed. I put a K&N plus a large tube on my '99 Ranger 3.0 and noticed no difference in power or economy.

My 01 7.3 and the Mountaineer "sounded" like it gave more hp, if you know what I mean, but no improvement in mpg. I have been using the one in the Mountaineer for 130,000 miles so I guess I could I got my moneys worth.

Too scared to try anything but a Motorcraft in the 6.0.

Alot of people say to use electrical contact cleaner. You can get it at auto part stores. Its more expensive than carb cleaner, but you might ruin a $100++ part by using carb cleaner. They say to use contact cleaner, because the MAS has sensitive parts in it and using something too aggresive can ruin it. When you do it unplug it, clean it, and dont plug it back in until your sure the MAS is dry(if not it "could" create a short)
Also a K&n for my truck costs about $60-70, a stock style filter will cost you $20-$25.
As for the resonators, i would probably cut it out too.
