Is there any way to confirm I am getting the most out of my engine. I just bought a f250 sd v10 with a 100k. I was told that these engines can get a ton of miles on them. I am using it as a weekend truck, but I want to make sure that I am starting off on the right foot.
BTW this is an awesome sight. I have already saved about 500 bucks with my AC and power lock fixes.
ya when you hook up the trailer and are going down the road and say to yourslef "o ya i forgot there was a trailer back there" then you know you got it...the v10 is a beast and you will know it...what year..?
2001. I have pulled a MF35 Tractor on an 18ft trailer. I'm guessing about 6-8000lbs. The engine really didn't labor at all. I am running roughly the sam rpm/speed with or without trailer. Of course I have been puuling the same load with a chevy blazer with a 4.3 litre engine and it barely budged it
one more question. How do I determine the gear ratio on my axles?
look at the drivers door or the pillar and look for the axle code, or crawl under the truck and look at the axle tag it will either have the numbers 3.73 or 4.10(ussually) printed on the tag ussually it doesnt say dirrectly 3.73 or 4.10 is will be printed in a cluster of numbers and letters
my bet is you have 3.73's
a way to tell if you have good power, how is the mileage, that will tell you how good the engine is running, floor it ,drop the hammer, gun it whatever you call it, go to wide open throttle on a open street and see how good it accelerates, it should lay you back in the seat somewhat, count how many seconds it takes to get to 60mph form 0mph

I think its probably fine. The acceleration seems ok, but my daily driver is an accura TL and it screams. The mpg runs between 11-14 on most fills. I will check the 0-60.
Also, which gear ratio is meant for what pruposes. Which one is meant for mostly empty driving and occasional towing.
i would say 4.10 wouls suit you best...maybe even 4.30...i have 3.73 with my 5.4 and man o man, i wouldnt wanna tow with it....so i dont...its my daily driver and my dad has a 2004 f350 crew cab cually v10 for towing heavy stuff and when i need to tow extreme stuff my sisters b/f has the 99 f350 supercab dually 7.3...so im pretty much good...lol...if your occasional towing is in the higher lbs...than i would say 4.30 but if its for lighter weight the 4.10s's would be fine...and even with lighter loads the 3.73';s should be fine
Took it out today, of course I'm paranoid because I bought it used. I was flooring it from a dead stop, but the tires wouldn't lock up. Driving about 30 I hammered it and I could feel the transmission kick down two gears and it definately threw me back in my seat. I don't know how good that is for the truck, but it was fun. I have some mud tires on it that have about 20k miles on them and get a lot of road noise. I need some good tires any suggestions
