Rear main out.
I've done a thread search and see a fairly even split on how to fix, it, pull the motor, or drop the trans/transfer. I need to get it change, leaking like crazy. Hate that it's the one piece, would much rather change the 2 piece unit.
Here's the deal, I know the rear main is bad because I'm getting oil from that general area. Checked the pan and, although it may have a leak, I'm convinced the puddles I'm getting are from more then what little MIGHT be leaking from the pan.
Secondary question, and a reason I'm leaning towards dropping the trans/transfer case, is I have red fluid leaking from somewhere, and I suspect it's the trans? I haven't torn into the drivetrain of this gen truck, but I've heard the trans fluid is red auto style?
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to find someone to change it, but no one wants to touch it, and I don't want to pay shop rates when I know i can (grudgingly) do it myself.
The rear main seal is something that I need to do soon also. A leaking rear main seal is usually indicated by engine oil dripping from the bellhousing of the transmission near the flywheel/flexplate (right near the rear of the engine block). Here are some instructions from my repair manual about how to go about this job:
