I've got a 1964 Fairlane 289 engine, with a 3-speed manual transmission, Motorcraft 2100 carb.
Now, I got the engine without a starter. Which type of starter matches this engine? Some "experts" reckon a 300 in-line six, 302 and 351 starter should do the trick, BUT on closer inspection (mounting the starter on the bellhousing and inspecting the business through the hole, where the transmission fits) revealed that the nose of the starter doesn't pass the flexplate far enough for the bendix drive gear to engage the flexplate. In fact it does engage the engine, but by a pubic hair width. So, in the long term the very edge of the flexplate will wear and eventually refuse to copulate with starter.
An engine that old may have the oddball 5 bolt bellhousing. I looked up the Fairlane on www.partsamerica.com, and then looked up a 1980 f150 with a 302, and they took different starters.
