Exclamation I effed up

I was workin on my truck and found that the IP was totally shot, to the top part off and it was full of rusty sediment etc. Me and a friend were trying to take it off and when I was reading the book on how to do it he was undoing the timing gear cover. He ended up taking the whole thing out, timing gear pump etc all in one peice. I was seriously freaking out because now the timing is all messed up as well as the pump being bad and all that good stuff. Anyways just wondering how screwed up everything is, thinking of just taking it to a shop and having it done the right way but if is not necessary than i wont

Your fine. You can turn the motor over and find the marks on the cam gear with a pick tool. You can feel it rubbing on the edge of the gear and then you will "feel" the marks. Don't sweat it.

BTW. Look at the timing mark on the balancer so you know your are getting close to marks on the cam gear. Just get the right ones.

You didn't "f" it up. I have changed pumps like that and it can be actually easier. Depends on what the motor is in.

The pump is easy to get off the gear. There are 3 bolts to remove in behind the oil filler tube. They are 12-point 5/16" bolts.

If your timing gear housing has been removed, here is a link to the best article/method I've seen for putting it back on and getting all the marks correctly lined up

thanks, read the whole thing and it doesnt seem to difficult. I hate messing with timing but now it doesn't seem so bad. Don't have time to tackle it today but tomorrow I will give it a shot and let you know.

That would work fine but you can easily feel it with a pick that has a 90 deg end that is about 1/8 inch long. It will be in about 1/16 to 1/8 below the root of the two teeth. If you set it like the article, before you set the gear get a pic and check it for your self so you will be ready for the next time.
