cylinder head storage

I have the stock heads off of my Mustang that I would like to store. What is the best way of prepping them and storing them?

if they'll need to be rebiult before runin them again you could do what i do. way back many years ago farmers use milk can instead of tanks ill fill these milk cans with drain oil and drop a head, crank what ever in there. this way its coverd in oil and no air can get to it to rust anything. these milk cans also have lids to keep dirt out also. they make a good place to sit out in the shop to!

They are the original heads which were just fine when I pulled em off. The milk can idea is really good, I just don't have any. I wonder if cleaning them off and then puting some light oil on them and wrapping them in plastic bags would be fine.

I have a set of heads I pulled back in the 70s. They did not have any machine work on them so the surfaces were as pulled. They have sat in the garage and made many moves including to the Pacific NorthWET. They are as good as the day I pulled them. No rust just the usual grey brown cast iron look.

I just cleaned them off way back and sprayed them with some spray lube. As long as you keep them in a clean dry place they should be fine. One of these days I got to rebuild that old Ford 260.

A crank shaft is a different story. Those suckers will rust in a heart beat.

Not saying the lazy man's way is good, but heads don't need a lot of preservation unless you did some machine work and exposed new metal.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
