Engine differences

While looking up an alternator for the 97, the partsstore listed 2 different 4.6L engines. What's the difference between these two?
4.6L 281CID V8 F1 (6)
4.6L 281CID V8 F1 (W)

How do you tell which one is in the truck? Does it matter when it comes to accessories?

8th position in the VIN number

The difference are in the engine block, the accessories shouldn't be concerned.

There is also a difference in the number of head bolts, too. The Windsor 4.6 has 11 bolts, and the Romeo has 13. Or maybe vice-versa, not sure off the top of my head.

The difference is mainly where it was built -- the differences in the block and the head bolt design are just indicators of which plant built the engine.

Valvecover bolts, not head bolts. The Romeo has a 6 bolt flywheel, Windsor has 8. There are some differences in the valvetrain components too, but the external stuff is the same.
