Question 289?

After weeks of blood, sweat and tears, I managed to do a successful swap, from 300 to 302...or so I was told. It was only when I had to check for VIN numbers that I discovered the casting number: C4OE-6015-C, which would reveal that the engine was produced in 1964 and came out of a Fairlane and is a 289. Aaaaaaargh!!!!!

What done is done, so that 460, in friend of mines shed is starting to look at me weird.

So, I have a couple of questions, being add odds with conflicting advice form "experts".

Starter: As I bought the engine without a starter, I fitted the original 300 starter and it works, but is there a specific starter matched to the 289?

Tappet noise: This is an enigma, as, yet again, there is conflicting opinions. How do I set the rocker arms, et cetera? As the valvetrain is somewhat noisy...sounds more like a Volkswagen. After hearing a 351 in a '54 F-100, I am determined to silence the 289.

Damper: Is there a difference between the 3-bolt and the 4-bolt? Apparently, the Fairlane 289 came out with a 3-bolt, but my 289 is a 4-bolt.

On the intake manifold, behind the carburator, there appears to be a cover-plate with three bolts. What is this?

Any tips on setting the 2100 carb? Running a bit rich, and turning the mixture screws out all the way provides no results. Disconnected the choke, rebuilt the carb...still nothing.

That is only a design number.

The actual casting date is also on the parts which is more important.

ie: * 8C18 *

Also I noticed you are new.

Please ask the specific topics in the specific related forums.

ie: Engine forums for engines
Fuel delivery for carb questions

see post #1

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ease-read.html
etc.

No 289's were put in 73-79 trucks and this forum is for specific 73-79 truck topics.

Topics:
Starter.. yes it goes by application (M/T or A/T) although service starters can be the same for multi-year engines

Got a pic of the cover plate ?

Mid 1965 were the first 289s with the modern 6 bolt bellhousing. Untill then 221-260-289 used a 5 bolt bellhousing. If your engine bolted up to the 300I6 bellhousing then it is not a 64 289.

Useless information?

In reponse to Mil1ion...I would like to politely inform you that I have made the above posts, for exactly the reason that my truck is, in fact, a 1973 Ford F-100 Custom! Do you really underestimate my intelligence? Common sense would negate that I would like to acquire advice and tips from gentlemen, like yourself, that also owns a vehicle of the same design and type.

On further investigation, it would appear that all the above questions pointed to one common denominator: two tappets had collapsed and the motor was running on six cylinders. The carburator was certainly not faulty and the motor is indeed a 302 hi-performance motor...merely a block bored to 302 size.

Once the collapsed tappets had been replaced...along with all the other tappets (I thought I'd mention that, as a matter of IQ and common sense) my 1973 Ford F-100 Custom took off like a rocket, with squelling tyres and a roar mightier than a lion.
