all of a sudden while driving my transmission jumped out of Overdrive, it still works in drive and will work (when starting from a dead stop) in OD for a little while and then it acts just like it has been shifted to neutral.
any help would be appreciated
You may have an internal problem, but if you can find out what controls the overdrive you may be able to find a bad sensor or something like that. I wouldn't think that it would be a vss or anything like that. Does it drive fine with the overdrive on until it shifts into od? If so you may have a bad od clutch/band. Not sure what holds od.
once it starts out in OD it will go for a little while and then quits, if I put it in Drive it will go on and change gears and do everything right, it is just that when I start it out in OD is when I have the problem.
Sounds to me like it may be internal. Could be a check ball, or servo stuck in the vavle body. Something like that. Have you keep up with changing the filter and fluid?
You could try that too. Put some lucas in with it.

It has been about 40,000 miles since I had the transmission serviced but maybe I should have it done again, what is lucas?
lucas realy aint as good as advertised after it warms up it becomes thinner than the oil and doesnt stick to the gears like all those little modes show at the auto parts store.
Thanks for letting me know what lucas oil is, I think I will service the transmission again and see if that helps, I tried the truck again today after it cooled down and it seems to work fine for a awhile then starts acting up again. maybe the fluids and filter need to be changed
here's something I tried in my 90 w e4od. they call it lube guard. I've been using it in ford trans with o/d surge & it works really well when you service your trans.

thanks for the tip, I will look for Lube Guard when I change the fluids
I guess any autozone will know what I am looking for.
I changed out the fluid and filter and now the transmission will shift in overdrive untril it gets to the high gear, then it loses it. My truck has the Automatic Overdrive Transmission. it will drive out OK as long as I keep it in drive, but will not work in OD.
