I have a 92 explorer with the 4.0 the temp guage goes up to hot then drops back down while driving...already replaced the radiator, thermostat, and temp sending switch. could it be a bad guage in the dash?any help would be apriciated,I'm not sure what do do next
Yes, it could be a bad gauge or bad wiring between the sender and the dash or something like that.
When I had similar behavior on y '92, I backprobed a voltmeter into the computer's ECT, which is independent of the dash gauge sender. If the ECT behaves like the dash gauge, then the dash gauge is probably ok. If the ECT shows something different, then the dash gauge is probably having a problem.
If your '92 is like my '92, you have two temperature sensors. One feeds the dash gauge (single wire sensor), and the other goes to the computer (two wire sensor), so they are different.
I'll look for the two wire sensor, the single wire is the one I replaced, is it possible that the one going to the computer is messing the second one up
It's hard for me to say that it is absolutely impossible, but I would say that it is highly unlikely that the two temperature sensors are interfering with each other. The idea is to simply compare the outputs of the two thermometers and see if they parallel each other (indicates that the dash gauge is probably right) or if they show something different (indicates that the dash gauge has a problem).
