Except that Dana called it a Power Lock, so close but no cookie this time ... Most of the LS units put in ford trucks for the rear axle were Dana 44s in half tons and Dana 60s for F250/F350s

I would like to see factory literature proving your point. The traction-lok is shown in the first set of pics, the power lock is shown in the second set of pictures. Even in the factory manuals they call it what they are, they show exploded views and pictures. A trac loc for a one piece unit, and a power lock for a two.

That still doesn't explain why you have an open differential and the wheels go the same direction... or did I miss that part?

I think you missed something, reread his first post. He never said that he had an open diff.

Werent you driving it before you jacked it up and spun a tire? Did you here noise from it when you were driving? Did you see any metal come out when you drained it?
What were you worried about?

I had only driven it a very short distance before jacking it up,because it needed brake work,i don't recall any odd noise,it just caught my attention that both wheels spun together, cause i've never seen that before. I was actually exited, thinking i had a really good locker that i didn't know came with the deal,i didn't get worried until i read the reply that it meant a broken carrier.and no,nothing to harsh in the gear oil, just what you'd expect from probably not getting changed in who knows how long.

Then I'd say put it back together and drive it. Put some L/S additive in just incase.

It sounds like a normal limited slip but its too hard to tell how tight the clutches are. And yeah dont forget to add limited slip addative with your gear oil or the next time you spin the tires like that the clutches will be shot and the tires will spin opposite directions.

Are you guys not seeing the pictures that he posted? I'm certain that he posted pictures of an open differential. DO NOT add Limited Slip additive to any differential that does not have a clutch type limited slip.

Tony-
Ford called their setup a trac lock, only used in Ford manufactured axles, Dana called their setup a power lock, only used in Dana manufactured axles. The two systems are different, dana only offered the power lock, in the second set of pictures, or the open differential in the first set of pictures.

The third picture (fuzzily) shows the clutches. (left side of the spider gears)

Take a look at these links, tell me what you think.

If I am still wrong, or maybe there is something I am not understanding, lets move this discussion to another thread, instead of continuing the hijack here.
