I've got a 390 mated to a T98 with some unknown bellhousing and have been looking for a cover for the lower exposed part of the bell. It is the flat/non-wrap around type. I've made a template out of cardboard for my trips to the junk yards (3 so far) and part stores. I haven't found a cover yet!!! Well, actually I did but in was on a 69 cougar sticking out of the bottom of a pile that I could see but not reach. I'm shocked that when they strip the motors and trannys they throw things like this away to the crusher.
Ok... So I've got a question about making one. What type of material should I use and what thickness? Since I've never actually had my hands on one and only seen them from a distance, I'm not sure if there is a slight formed shape or plain flat. If it's flat with 4 bolt holes it should be easy enough to cut the bell shape.
Any thoughts?
I would have bought new/used/whatever by now if I could have found one.
Rod, I am surprised that you can't lay hands on one. Are you looking at the automatics? It is a dust cover and if you have a template, find a piece of sheet metal and make one.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
I started off the search stating a manual tran. After looking at numerous (missing cover) FE types, I figured out it's the one from the AT that I need. Figured this was an easy go to the wrecking yard and pick one up and it would have been for the wrap around style. I haven't gone to a scrap yard for 20yrs and WOW, I'm shocked (sadly) at what they crush!
I will try another "" better yard this week and if they don't have it I will get a piece of something and make my own.
Hey, I found one! After looking in, under and around row after row of ford trucks & vans (one last yard I told myself) I was about ready to give up. As I was walking out of the yard when I spotted a Ford (73) down on the end of a chuvy row and can you believe it... it still had the dust cover! It's now mine for the price of $2.10, about 10hrs of looking and 5 salvage yards later.
Anyway, the cover is stamped i.e. it isn't flat. There is an extruded center that steps to a mounting flange. I'm guessing this extra clearance area keeps the flywheel from scraping if any flex that occurs.
