Start off by saying this is my first post in this section but I've been lurking around for a few months now and have fixed a few problems allready due to the knowledge in this section. So thanks on that part but heres another one for you.
Started up my truck up this morning via remote start and it puffed out some white smoke, yet it doesnt look like the kind of white smoke it would be if it was burning coolant. Also the turbo is making what sounds like a grinding sound. I wish I could be more specific. I can tell you it sounds nothing like this http://youtube.com/watch?v=LCqmspn1dRs&mode=related&search= its just as loud but it has like I said a grinding sound to it. Also to add to that I was just driving down the highway up a very mild grade. I was sitting at about 1.2k when I hit the hill and rapidly began to lose speed so I put my foot in a little not enough to get the tranny to downshift. The rev's barely rose and the turbo didn't sound like it was spooling. My boost gauge read 8lbs and my egt's were pushing 1100. Never seen over 900 except when towing before that. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Modifications are below.
03 f250 72k miles
4" mbrp turboback with 6" tip
AFE stage II intake
Edge juice w/ attitude (Note that it hasn't been on the truck for a little while now but when it was on there It has only seen up to level 3 for brief occasions)
I tow up to 18k pounds about every other weekend. Also it doesn't really have anything to do with the turbo issue I have 35" mt's and a 6" fabtech lift.
White smoke is unburnt fuel and i normal in a cold start of an engine. Sounds like your turbo is failing and needs to be replaced. You need to take your truck in and have it diagnosed and fixed. If your truck is still withing 5/100K warranty the most you will pay is $100. Note. A/M intakes are frowned upon by FMC and many dealers, this could jeprodize your warranty especially since you are having a turbo issue.
agree with above. put stock intake back on and take it in. describe symptoms and hopefully they show up while tech drives. even better would be codes to put them in the right direction. "Grinding" can't be good. good luck man.
dealer the truck was purchased from doesn't mind the intake. I had the IMP replaced with everything on the truck still. They might think twice about it though considering its only got about 5 months worth of warranty left. Not sure it would do much good putting the stock box back on considering I guarantee they have it on the computer that its got a intake. I made a appointment for wednesday so I'll let you know how it goes.
definitely a boost problem. remember with the same amount of fuel as before going in the engine but with less air to burn it you are going to be running super rich, this is why your egt's skyrocketed even without adding more fuel.
yea I put the egt and the turbo problem together but I don't understand why there isn't more smoke. You would think that if the issue was that apparent that I would have some extreme smoke going on. Not the tiny bit of almost white smoke that I'm currently getting.
On a side note I decided to do some of my own troubleshooting and plugged the edge back in and ran it on economy tune. The truck still smokes on startup and has the grinding sound but the egts are back to normal and the power is there. You think that the edge is forcing the turbo to boost when it really doesn't want to?

White smoke at start up is normal when the engine is cold and more pronounced when the temps are cool. This is a normal occurance on trucks running normally.
If you have grinding, you have a serious turbo problem that is going to get worse quickly. The Edge is not helping the problem, just altering the symptoms a little. You need to take your truck in and get it properly diagnosed and fixed.
How does one know when to start the truck via remote control? Especially in cold climates? In other words when do you know that the glow plug heat indicator has completed the warm up cycle when your depressing the remote starter function on your key fob? If your looking at your watch to determine when to start, you may want to also hang a thermometer nearby to look at the outside ambient tempurature because the time will always vary.
many aftermarket remote start systems can be tied into the wait to start indicator (which i usually dont do, its hard to get behind the instrument cluster). I recommend a pulse timer relay which can be programmed for a certain duration. I usually set them up for 20-30 seconds to give more than ample time for the glow plugs then it will start. Im sure in colder climates it will vary quite a bit.

Like the above post said I have it set to let the plugs warm for 20 seconds before it turns the engine over.
