I paid $35 for my 1984 wiring harness from a junk yard. The stipulation when I told them I wanted it was that I wouldn't pay for it if 1 wire was cut. I know I got a deal, but multiple hundreds sounds like WAYYYYY too much. I was willing to easily go to $100 but I got lucky. Look around, they're out there.
Try "U-Pull" salvage yards. Valuable experience is gained in the process of removing the harnesses + they're usually cheaper that way. You likely won't find intact engine harnesses unless you happen upon a truck that hasn't yet had it's engine removed. The yards I've visited pull the engines and transmissions before the vehicles are put in the "U-Pull" areas and they cut/torch everything connected to the engines.
I'm not supposed to talk prices here so I won't, but...
I sold my last 80 - 86 Harness (v-8 Carb, automatic, regular cab, longbed) from front lights to back lights, frame, engine, cab, every wire in the truck last week for far less than 5 Bills. That sounds high to me.
I'm now all out of 80 - 86 harnesses until I get some more trucks in but give me a shout in a few weeks if you still haven't got one and we can probably help out..
