I have a 2000 7.3l diesel Excursion. It has been relatively problem free until now. Yesterday I got in it to start it and got some odd results. First off, I heard what I thought was relay chatter, then the gauges all went nuts. They all jumped up and down and then stopped. At the time, I think the Anti-Theft light was blinking as well. The I cranked it over and it acted like a low battery, then kicked in to full power, but no start. It did this 3-4 times and then finally went through a normal start. It still has the original batteries. Any ideas?
I'm with Nick. My first thought was CPS (cam position sensor) too.
Hey, if it is the CPS, you're lucky. The dealerships are selling them for under $30 bucks now, instead of the $130+ dollars they used to sell them for.
Do a quick search using the term "CPS" in the 7.3L diesel forum and you'll get tons of reading, and I think you'll find your symptoms in several threads too.
I don't us my Ex very often except for towing and road trips. That being said, it sits for weeks at a time. When my battery gets weak, this exact thing happens. I throw the battery charger on it, and the next morning, all is well. The fact that it eventually did start could just mean the terminals need to be cleaned... I don't know much about the cam sensor, but I do feel 7-8 year old batteries could be the problem. JmHO.
You were dead nuts on! After a few experiments, including cleaning the terminals, I replaced the batteries and all is well. I have not had to replace the CPS yet and have heard that the car just dies and can't be restarted.
Additionally, my father-in-law has an F250 or 350 and he has had the relay buzz for a long time now. His batteries are only a couple years old. But his starts okay even w/ the relay buzz. Also, his will run really rough to start w/ and then eventually die and he has to restart and then it finally will run smooth. His mechanic, who is pretty good, can't even figure this one out.
