im just wondering what heads i have on my engine, are they 2V or 4V heads. i had a local shop rebuild the heads to stock with springs to handle my .484 edlebrock cam. the numbers on the heads are: "D2TEAA" neighbor said the heads are from 1972, hopefully numberdummy (i think thats his name) can come forward and say what they are.
what engine are you talkin about? the only one that were different was the 351 clevlend's in the corner of the head it would either have a 4,4. or nothing the 4 would be closed chamber 4v heads the 4 with a dot is 4v open chamber and nuthing at all is just plain jane 2v heads. some folks say that 351w's where different also but ive had my hands on both and dont see anything different.if ya got an Fe now thats a whole new story theres more heads then you can shake a stick at
it is a 390 engine. i think the heads are from a 352/360/390. my orginal heads needed a lot of work and the shop had these extra heads around, so he re-did a set he had, new seats, springs orginal valves, new springs and milled the heads to make sure the mating surface was straight and flat.
on most fe's you either have what i call big port heads(intake ports same size as the gasket) and small port (port about 1/2 the size of the gasket) when i was runnin fe's id use the big port one with a 4v intake, and small with 2v intake
a neighbor had said if i have a 4bbl intake and the heads were designed for 2bbl intake i would have problems with one side of the block not getting enough fuel into it. is this true, since this neighbor is a mechanic and works for a ford dealer?
F250. Don't want to discredit your neighbor, but I don't think it's a concern. Lots of guys are running 4 barrels on truck motors that only came with 2 barrels.
The heads are good, not great and just plain old 2V heads. If you want better heads, start looking for some GT or CJ heads. Before you undertake a long search for 4V heads that can cost a bunch of $$$$$ to rebuild, might want to consider and aluminum set from Edelbrock.... I've installed a couple sets of them and had one set flowed, ported, and equalized by a cylinder head shop with a Serdi CNC head machine. They will outflow and out perform any stock configuration cast iron head I've ever seen. Just out of the box they work great!!! With some port work and the right cam you can get an FE to put out horsepower and torque in the 450+ range!!!! Guaranteed to blow the tires right off a 2WD pickup!!!!!
I've honestly wondered about the Edelbrock heads, vs a good porting job and rebuild on a set of iron heads. I've already heard the argument of a lot of weight savings, but is the 1200-1300 for a set of the aluminum really worthwhile? It would be nice to have respectable power...
Hay f2501967 over in modesto, jess over here in Los Banos calling, say those D2TE-AA heads ( D = 70's, 2 narrows it to 1972, t = truck, E = engine. AA is a part change number)what you have should be o.k for 2v or 4v. this head was used on 360, 390, and also the 428 model fe engine, it is a standard head without air holes. if you are looking for high compression heads you need ether C8AE-L, or C8AE-U, these are used on 390 merc 2 & 4bbl HC heads, but you will need the correct intake manifold, my suggestion use the D2TE-AA heads, if you need a intake let me know, Jess (209) 769-4058
thank you all for responding, right now i am running edlebrock performer 390 intake and cam w/lifters. the cam is rated at .484 lift. had the heads re-built, all seats re-done with springs that can handle a cam up to .050 lift. and also a edelbrock 750 carb. and im also using the k&n filter with a tornado, to me this really helps with gas milage. the main problem im having now is the pistons are making a ringing sound only on the pass. side after the engine get up to operating temp. im heading to oakdale today 10/1 and someone is gonna check it out for me.
