If you are talking about the top line on the tag of an 8.8 it tells what trucks this rear end was used in and the plant that made it.
You can look up the code in a Hollanders Identification Manual.

what code and what truck and year to find a 3.55 with a locker type carrier
i am looking to swap a whole rear end to get a locker rear so if something is wrong with it i can just swap it back out
this truck will get stuck in wet grass and a is a one wheel wonder
when i go to the camp i have to pull the truck with my 4 wheeler about a 1/2 mile down the dirt road if it rains ( just slick ) lol

I think what you are looking for is an "H9" from 1992-1995 F150 (maybe also 1996 but can not remember the year they changed the spread, it was 96 or 97).
This should be a 3800 3.55:1 LS.

Your "18" is a 3800 3.08:1 open.
