Hi everyone. The clutch in my 2000 ranger 2.5l 5spd will not engage until the very top of the pedal. I've already repaced the clutch and it was engaging sooner for a short time but then gradually moved higher and higher. This is the exact opposite problem that most people have. Pumping the pedal a lot seems to make it engage a little bit lower but sometimes it is so bad that I wonder if the clutch is actually disengaging all the way. Could this be the master building up too much fluid? or something else.
Does it shift in/out of gear OK? If so, I don't think you have a problem at all - dis-engagement at the top of the pedal travel would likely mean the fluid system is fully bled and free of air... which is a very good thing - making things easier on the syncros and gears during shifts.
Also, it would be somewhat normal for a new clutch to "wear in" soon after installation, making the engagement area narrower and nearer the "top" as time goes by.
But if there is some problem (like slippage...?), the master cylinder may be the problem (i.e. - back-bleed port plugged/covered when pedal fully released). I'd also make sure the pushrod is fully seated into the master cylinder piston, and the pedal/rod is free and clear to move fully (back/up, especially) without getting hung up on anything - the piston should come back enough to contact the retaining circlip, with the pedal released IOW.
