Hey,
I feel stupid!I have built many engines and tore even more apart but cannot get the heads off a 352.This was a running engine, not a rusty hulk.I taken ofcourse the intake off and 10 bolts per side.I have beat on them, chiseled, big pry bars in intake port with all my 270 pounds!
I still have the exhaust manifolds on which is the real reson i am pulling these heads,to get these damn logs off! Also am checking the exhaust seats.
Can anybody tell me my problem?I have never not been able to get a cylinder head off anything!
Thanks.
There is two places to pry an FE head off. Get a stout but sharp flathead screwdriver. On the intake side of the head by the deck you will see two indentions. Stick the screwdriver in there and start whacking it with a hammer. You will not mess up the surface of the head because it has indentions on the bottom too just for this purpose. You might be suprised how easy they come off.
Thanks alot RS,as you can tell,I am no FE pro by along shot.I will admit my lack of knowing all the FE quirks.
BTW,Nice et's with your F100.What are your 60ft times?Lotta wheel spin? With 4.10 gears and a locker and good tires i bet there are some 13.90's or 14.0?s in that!
My freind tore down his super hot 390 last night of fear of broken rings, was oil foiling #8 plug.Turned out to be a seperated intake gasket. He was relieved.
It is:
A '64 390 PI short block,Cam??HOT!,Edelbrock aluminum heads,Blue Thunder intake,KB pistons,C6 race prepped.Is in a mud race '84 F150 4x with lotsa mods.He runs as fast at most Chevy stroker powered Jeeps!

Thanks again.
Thanks. My best 60' time is 2.303. I don't spin a lot on launch only because I try to control it but I am far from being able to throw the hammer down all the way at launch. I am planning on going with 4.10 gears, posi and street slicks. I hope to get into the mid or low 13's. I was only shifting at 5,000 rpm when I made that run. Your buddy seems like he has a pretty good setup. I bet it really screams.
Cool!I read your mind! Also unhook those front shocks when at the strip.
Hey i uploaded a pic of my freinds mud racer in my gallery.Check it out!Pic was taken two week ago. He's got the only newer truck with a 390 i know of.
Ha!You were right.I stuck my big SnapOn screwdriver in there and popped it right loose!Big ol dowel pins huh?
Hey,Do all FE's have montrous ports and 2inch intake valves?I though this all looked massive for a engine you dont think as a performance peice.Though it did run ok.
All FE heads have at least 2.03" intake valves and 1.55" exhaust valves. They really aren't hurting on the intake side. The exhaust is what needs some port & bowl work for performance along with the 1.65" CJ valves.
Oh.Thanks.
One more thing before i quit bothering you,Would indexing the spark plugs do anything for these engines even a stock 352?I noticed the area where the plug comes through is not exactly facing intake valve and when they are turned towards the exhaust it doesnt look to effient to me.Is it worth it or mainly bull?
And thanks again for your help.
I have never heard of it being a benefit on FE motors. Maybe if you were pushing 750HP and running NASCAR I would worry but on a stock or warmed over motor no.
OK,thanks. One more question!!!Sorry, how many horse are headers worth on FE's?I have a set of truck headers i am putting on this.Truck is 66 F250,I have owned Ford trucks exclusively but have more experience with ChryCo engines. So with that,I have never seen a set of more restrictive manifolds than these.Exhaust comes out of the head and BAM!Hits a wall!I thought that was corny as heck.Never seen such a severe exhaust travel.
Thanks again.
When I went from leaky manifolds to headers on my stock worn out 360 it was just barely noticeable that they helped out. I'm sure that if I put the manifolds back on my 390 now it would cost me at least 50HP. They are a horrible design.
