Recommendations on brand and type? Low cost is better!
I have a Putnam class 3 on our 96 Explorer and a Valley class 3 on our 05 Ranger. I installed both of the hitches that bolt to the frame. The only tough part was not having an extra set of hands to hold the hitch up underneath the vehicles when bolting them on...other than that the installation was straight forward.
The Putnam on the Explorer is visible from the rear but the Valley on the Ranger is more streamlined and hardly noticeable. This could be due to the application for that particular vehicle rather than the manufacturer of the hitch.
I bought the Putnam from an RV business and the Valley from a truck store. The Putnam was bought retail and was reasonable...that was sometime back so I do not remember what it cost exactly. The Valley was purchased from a friend through an "employee and friends" discount that made the price outlay a little sweeter.
