yet another sand blasting thread

Two things:
1. opinions on painting the frame a light grey...yea, or nay?
2. I plan on having the local blaster do my frame(my comp. still getting water in the lines), but was thinking about the spring shackles. Would it be better to deal with the rivets and remove them, or just leave them on and hope it gets blasted and primed inside the "pocket"?
it ain't a show truck, but it most certainly is rusty where they're riveted on.

PS: (Bob and Stu) I got the F2 crossmember to fit. It seems the frame being 34" allows the crossmember to go in from the rear, and where the frame tapers to 33 1/2" (before it reaches 32") is where the crossmember snugs itself.

Hey hey!! Didn't have to spread it even a little? I thought with the frame indented where it fits, it would be too tall/wide to slip in. Good goin'. Stu

Ah yes, the BFH solution. Well done.

To your original question, I wouldn't worry about rust under the rivets unless your frame is a real mess. I would use the phosphate rust neutralizer stuff that turns black when it's working on the rust. That and use a rust encapsulator like Eastwoods sells, or POR15, Zero Rust, Rust Bullet, etc.

My entire frame is coated with eastwoods rust encapsulator. I would leave it alone, but it happens to be the "primer red" version instead of black. It will get top coated someday.

Anyway, so far there is no rust coming through the stuff.

You can see it in this pic:

thanks Brian, I was looking to use Eastwoods, too....and they have a couple different colors to choose from...one being grey....i should double check my catalog, though, it's been awhile.

thanks, Stu....the shackles don't have that "crusted layer that forms out of nowhere" between the frame and shackle yet.

I wish they had used something other than "primer red".

It has been on there for years with no issues that I am aware of. Well...other than a missed spot beside the engine...inside the "C".

Everything is painted with it. Frame, floor of the cab, bottom of engine, bottom of transmission, rear end, front axle, etc.

Since a 9 inch is in mine i took the rivets out of the spring hangars and was glad i did. Inside of the frame on the rear hangars was a lot of rust and the metals thin around the hole where the hangar sat. The front hangars had a different problem, Three of the four rivet holes on each side on the frame were starting to crack(I'm fixing that with the welder and installing plates behind all four hangars.

It might take a little extra work but IMO well worth it.

yeah, I've found 2 cracks...one in front by the bumper rivet, and one in back where the rear bumper bolted on. Also the crossmember by the forward rear spring shackle is rusted through where the running board mount goes. I'm looking to box the frame behind each shackle anyway.

here's the problem area. I'm sure the crossmember bracket's gotta go. Gonna have to box the frame, and in the next post you'll see how deteriorated the shackle rivets are. Now I'm thinking the frame may have come all apart.

there isn't much rivet left. So do you think I should do as wiz did, and replace them with bolts?

It needs work. George (earl) took his apart, blasted the parts, repaired cracks, epoxied all the parts, and then bolted everything back together. I am not sure what bolts he used, but you can check Earl's world.

I think I would follow in his footsteps with the amount of rust I see.

Sorry...I am not used to that down here.

Yeah...George documented everything. I wish his health would improve and he would return.

We all need to document stuff as well as he does.......

well, the conclusion is I'm going backwards. After I test fit all the pieces, and mocked up the whole drivetrain and engine for the last few months, I've found myself in perfectionist purgatory. I've pulled everything off, hoping to just blast and prime, but the more I get into it, the worse my frame looks. I'm gonna remove all the rivets, and start over. I'm expecting wayyyy too much torque to leave the thinned out frame untouched. My luck for ya, lol.
