I found out the hard way this week on a trip that my Yolk on my 9" is toast. I went through 3 U joints in about 150 miles. Anyway my truck is a 76 F150 long box 4x4 and I noticed that Jeffs Bronco Graveyard has a couple of different options. How do I go about knowing which one I need for my truck?
Different pinion supports use different bearings thus requiring a different length "yoke". Removing the "yoke" and measuring it will provide you with the demensions you need to replace it.
*note* if your pinion support permits the use of a crush sleeve, you should also re-install a new one. Crush sleeves can't be re-used. They will never allow you to set the proper pre-load.
Here is a link that should explain what I am trying to say. Good luck. http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm
I just rebuilt the rearend and used a shim kit instead of the crush sleeve. I assume in this case I should be able to put the same torque on it and be fine. Is this correct or no?
Oh ya What measurement do I take on the yolk? length I assume?
No crush sleve is good. I do not really like them, nor do I use them either, so re-torque will be adequate.
The link will show you the comparisson you are looking for. You are looking for length and depth. The use of a Daytona style pinion support and larger bearing requires a different depth than others. I have heard that even a long one can be machined down to work, but can't confirm.
I would imagine given the size of the bearing there are some differences with the overall length, even though the installed length is the same for all of them.
There is a picture in the link that describes this.
