Overdrive, Self re-setting ?

Overdrive, Self re-setting ?
I have a '90 bronco with a 351w and an automatic trans, On the dash there is a pushbutton switch with a light that indicates if the overdrive is on or not. So im on the highway the other day and i hit the switch to see if the overdrive is on or not and the engine revs up another 500 rpm's and the light goes on showing that when the light is on the overdrive is off-..... sounds kinda backwards to me, what does yours do ?? My real question is that the next day when im on the highway the overdrive is on but i never pushed the button, does it set it self on after the engine is re-started ? how does it work ?

THANK YOU !!! this is the only totally complete answer ive ever gotten im my entire life !!!! This system could really turn around and bite you if you are pulling a heavy trailer long distances... I had a transmission repairman tell me that this trans doesnt like the overdrive cause there is only 2 clutches for all that torque.... I never tow, but maybe I should never use the o.d. to make the trans last ?

Well it is the same trans that they put in behind the diesels, and they have to use overdrive to hold speeds over 45mph to not damage the eng. The overdrive has to use a planetary gear set to make a gear ratio over 1-1(drive or 3rd gear on most automatics) that makes a lot of heat and heat kills a trans. Just put a bigger cooler on it and keep it serviced. It will last longer. The plate style coolers more efficient. I like “Long True
