Distrubutor question.

I've almost completed my first head gasket replacement. I've put almost everything back together but when I went to put the distributor back in, it won't go. I marked it etc. when I pulled it out and now, when I look down the 'hole' I see what must be the oil pump driveshaft. It appears to be leaning against the opening and this is what is stopping the distributor from going in. Is there some way to get it out or move it over or get it to where I can put the distributor in??????
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Try crossing your eyes with your tongue hanging out of your mouth while trying to install the dizzy. Seriously, it's just a matter of getting wiggled together just right. You also might try rotating the engine just a bit while trying to install the distributor. Good luck!

I fought that for probably 45 minutes on my rebuild. Once it finally drops, it makes the beer taste awfully good.

Distrubutor question.

Sometimes the darn thing drops right in and sometimes it is just plain rediculous. Its good that the pump shaft is leaning against the edge of the hole. If it wasn't it would be in the oil pan. Watch out for this as it is a common problem on FEs.

Distrubutor question.

If it’s the shaft that’s keeping it from going down all the way, have someone bump the starter as you are pushing down on the dizzy, it will eventually all line up and drop in. Careful if the motor kicks back on compression, it will try to pop out the dizzy.

Post Distrubutor question.

Using a long, thin screw driver, place a small glob of grease on the end of the oil pump drive shaft. You can then nudge it towards the center of the hole and the grease will keep it from falling over to one side. Then poke the distributor down and turn the shaft back and forth to engage the hex and drive gear. If you think you must turn the crankshaft, do it by hand with a breaker bar, slowly. Good luck!
