So I have a set of cabinets in the kitchen that have seen better days. With all the remodeling I have going now I can't afford new ones for a few years. The seem to possibly be built out of plyboard, with a varnish or laquer over the top. Anyway they look like crap. I have no interest in stripping them, and re-staining since they're not going to be here forever.
Think I would be able to prime over the urathane or whatever and then paint them?
Not greasy, just looking OLD! Some flaking in a few spots. I guess I'll try a test piece inside a door. Or put it off until my dishwasher gets here and prime on the cabinet section that's coming out. All I know is no matter what I'm not completely stripping them. I just refinished an old front door from the 1890's... They must have painted the thing every other year since, with the amount of paint that came off. Embossing, and engraving...Still having nightmares from that job!!!
If you have lacquer finished cabinets you will have to use it to paint them. Nothing will stick to it. Any other type of paint will just peal off. Sand them the best you can & get some lacquer cabinet paint to paint them with. I work in a cabinet shop. Most cabinets are finished with lacquer. If they were locally built they may have a different finish. If they are a factory brand I'd bet they have a lacquer finish.
