Dumb question......

I'm finally getting close to getting my truck back on the road.
I just dropped a new 390 in it ('76F150 4x4) and have found a dipstick hole in the block. My old oil pan had a hole in it for the dispstick, and thats where I put it.
Question: What's the best way to plug the block dipstick hole?
Is there a part, freeze plug, or should I just get an old tube and pinch it off?
Thanks!

Hey DutchmanAZ, I don't know the answer to your question. If it's a dumb question, what does that say about me?? Just kidding. No question is a dumb question. Well........ Almost.

Dumb question......

You may want to check with ford. They might have a plug just for it. Any way that won't send material into the pan would work. You could even epoxy a small square of gasket material over it.

Dumb question......

Would anyone happen to know the size of the hole? I'm guessing
7/16th..I didn't measure it this morning and would like to pick a freeze plug up or something on my way home.

Thanks again

Dumb question......

Thanks, but I think they are talking about the width of the dipstick itself, not the tube. Appreciate it though

Dumb question......

I tapped mine for a pipe plug. It was a 1/8" pipe tap, which has an o.d. of .40. It was loose when I screwed it in so I'll guess its a 3/8" hole. I just squeezed some silicon in and tightened up the plug.

Dumb question......

I had the same problem. I searched around until I found a 2" bolt that would just go in the hole. I then gooped it up with gasket sealer and stuck it in. So far, so good.

And to answer yer question,....YES,......I am from Alabama. Ha! Give us Southern folks some duct tape and bailing wire and we think we can fix just about anything from a John Deer to the Space Shuttle! Well it works for me.

Take care,
Lee

Dumb question......

Thanks to all who replied. I ended up using a 1/2inch freeze plug
that I crimped oblong to match the hole. I secured it with contact cement and it looks like it's holding just fine. I'll probably go back and put a little RTV around it just for good measure.
