Glow Plugs???

The truck is blowing lot of blue smoke when you start it in the morning. After it warms up it runs fine and doesn't smoke at all. It has plenty of power once it warms up and it doesn't matter if it is 80 outside or 20, it still does it. I just put a new glow plug relay in about 3 months ago. Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm in the same position, and I thinks my glow plugs need replacing. You can test them with a multimeter, but I dont remember the resistance to look for. Someone will chime in.

Mine did that last year. Ended up going to the dealer cause it wasn't throwing codes and the glowplugs were good. Dealer replaced a sensor that had a lower then normal output when cold. Had to leave the truck overnight so they could see what was going on.

You expect me to remember from a year ago? It did correct the smoke issue, don't remember the sensor but mechanic said it was the first one they had ever seen go south and had to order it in.

To test the glow plugs measure the resistance with a multimeter. Disconnect the Valve cover harness. Stick one probe on a good ground, I used the negative battery post, and the other one of the four large outside pins. A good glow plug will be between .1-2 ohms. IMO if one is bad on a one side replce them all. I ordered from this company http://www.source-products.com/public_html/index.html a replacement plug to help me out in checking out the glow plugs.

I'd guess either Engine Oil Temp or Air Intake Temp. IIRC, both are used to determine whether the Glow Plug Relay will turn on. If one of them is not reading correctly, such as IAT thinks it's 70* outside when it's really 30*, the GPR may not kick on.

My guess is the Engine Oil Temp, I was working on mine yesterday (85+ degrees out) and the GPR still energized.
