When we got rid of our 1990 Taurus earlier this year it still had the factory battery in it! As far as I know it still does, that car(or battery) just will not die! I think it really depends on how lucky you are i just replaced the battery in my mom's Corsica because the terminal rotted off and it was at least 10 years old. Other than that the cars we own are still less than 3 years old so the batteries are still good and probably will be for a while if were lucky.
Batteries, especially off road ones can fail unexpectedly so it is cheap insurance if it bothers you. But, Once in a great while a brand new battery will fail just a month or two out so a new battery is no guarantee, so have other backups if you are in a critical condition, like deep woods.

You have pointed out the fallacy in replacing things that dont need replacing as "cheap insurance". In analysis of failures in aircraft, newly replaced/overhauled components are many times more likely to fail than ones that have been in service thousands of hours. Scheduled inspections yes, automatic replacements at a set time interval, usually not.
