My 99 E350 original battery gave up today. A new one will go in tomorrow after nine years. (It was manufactured in July of 98.)

My 97 f250 still has the original battery. I replaced darn near everything else though...

When we got rid of our 1990 Taurus earlier this year it still had the factory battery in it! As far as I know it still does, that car(or battery) just will not die! I think it really depends on how lucky you are i just replaced the battery in my mom's Corsica because the terminal rotted off and it was at least 10 years old. Other than that the cars we own are still less than 3 years old so the batteries are still good and probably will be for a while if were lucky.

I have a 5 year old battery, it still cranks good but wonder if I should replace it.

In my experience, they go bad from neglect and no usage.

You have pointed out the fallacy in replacing things that dont need replacing as "cheap insurance". In analysis of failures in aircraft, newly replaced/overhauled components are many times more likely to fail than ones that have been in service thousands of hours. Scheduled inspections yes, automatic replacements at a set time interval, usually not.

So after replacing my MH battery on Friday, it appears that my F150 battery has failed too. It was an "84 month" battery, failed after 61 months.
