All the wife told me she had a flat tire the other morning, so i put the spare on. With the tire/wheel off I noticed that the sway bar linkage was broken. I looked on the other side and it was broken as well. I noticed the tires starting to wear horribly. I am getting ready to replace the linkages. Any other things I might look for. its a 99 expy with 120k on it. Never had any problems...should I replace the stock shocks? Ball Joints, how do I test those., wheel bearings?..what do you all think. Everything is stock on it, but I am concerned about the tires wearing funny. I will have it aligned when I get done, but if there is anything that could be wrong I want to replace and fix before the alignment. any comments greatly appreciated.
Uneven tire wear is most likely due to warn lower ball joints or tie rods. Jack the truck up, grab the outsides of the tires and rock back and forth to see if there is any play - side to side is usually tie rods, top to bottom is usually ball joints. Bad wheel bearings make themselves known with humming/grinding that changes pitch with vehicle speed - usually not a big factor in tire wear. I just replaced warn tie rods and ball joints on my '98 with 130k.
Broken sway bar links affect handling (excessive roll in corners), but don't have much effect on tire wear. Broken links are very common - replace with after market, such as Moog. If shocks are original, they are way past due - Bilsteins are generally considered the best option by most folks on the forum.
......by the way, you'll get more action on your posts if you put the problem in the title.
thank you for all of the tips. I will check them within the next few days, and post the results. Got the sway bar links ordered as well as a set of bilistein shocks...
