I'm thinking of installing an aux. pusher fan on my truck to boost A/C performance when in traffic or idleing while doing my paperwork. I think a manual switch would fit my needs better than a thermostat because when I am doing paperwork the truck is cold. JCW has a few brands from about $114 to $141 Derale and Mr. Gasket. I know Mr. Gasket is fair quality. Has anyone ever considered or done this. Truck doesn't overheat it's just this Texas heat doesn't let your A/C work well without air passing over condenser coil.
I have not done this, but I don't see how it could hurt, if you are not trying to repace, but add to, the stock fan. Some people are using the fans from a Ford Taurus, I understand they move a LOT of air, and you can pick them up for cheaper at a junkyard, then go get a universal mounting kit (the same thing that will come with your new Mr Gasket fan) for about $10. If you are going to wire it with a manual switch anyway, it may save you a few bucks in case it doesn't work.
I did the Taurus fan swap in my truck and I can make my A/C blow ice cold when the truck isn't moving, not to mention it keeps my engine ice cold too Let me know if you want pics of my install, I'm sure you've probably seen them on my other thread already.
Not sure if you know this radial, but by removing that clutch fan and swapping in an electric fan you will also realize a little more throttle response and maybe a touch better gas mileage. I know this from personal experience.
I been listening to ya'll talk about this for a while now. I think I may need a higher amp. alt. though, mine is a 95amp. I think. I could sure use anything to boost MPG on this gashog! I saw a tsb on my truck that says Ford recommends 5W20 oil all year long will get you 1/2 mpg more, just can't get used to that idea.
I'm using the 95amp and she powers the fan great on the low speed. The high speeds dips my power gauge about 15-20% depending on engine RPM. I can still use the high speed with no side effects but I imagine its not good to put that extra strain on the alternator if I don't have to. And I don't have to, the low speed moves loads of air.
Regardless, the fan is only on maybe 5-10% of the time I'm driving
Well thanks for all the info. I am getting antsy to start it now. I'm going to a wrecking yard tomorrow to look for a seat belt and I will nose around for a fan while I'm there. Sorry if I am a little slow at getting back sometimes between replys, I'm a single parent with an 8 year old daughter and she wears me out sometimes getting her fed and what ever. Thanks again, Robert.
As for the alternator draws... I am still planning to swap my 95amp with a 130 amp out of a super-duty that way I won't have to worry about not having enough power. FFI has the details on how to do this swap and sells all the wiring you'll need.
Yeah make sure that you get the fan out of a 3.8L Taurus. I've also heard that the ones from the Mark VIII work, and are a little bit bigger (I think). Also Thunderbirds have these fans I believe... Just keep your eye out for the 3.8L engine I guess.
Yeah! I found FFI on this forum a few years ago and it's a great site. It has helped me a lot. I saw that part about the alternators too. Thanks for the reply.
Well, I got the fan today, checked it out and it works. Funny thing though I measured the opening in my fan shroud and it's 22", while I was noseing arount the wrecking yard today I saw a fan I believe it was a thunderbird it was at least 20" in dia. and it had 3 mounting pads and it was mounted to the fan shroud. I almost bought it, and it has given me some ideas...?? I also stopped by the Hot Rod shop and got a thermostatic fan switch, they were out of fan controllers and relays though. I'll have to check somewhere else on those. You can see the fan in my gallery until figure out how to put it here
