I'm borrowing a "in bed" camper to take a fishing trip to New York to do some Salmon fishing. I will be driving about 500 miles & pulling a 16' bass boat behind my F250 5.4 auto with 373 gears. I was told that the camper weights about 1300lbs empty. My question is I have never driven with a camper in the bed what should I expect?? I have done a lot of towing so I not worried a lot. but is there anything I should worry about???
Since you do not normally carry a slide-in camper, does your truck have a tie down set up for the camper? Assuming that you do, you shouldn't have any problems. My truck, a 2004, is the same as yours. I carry a 2,600# +/- slide in and tow a 6,000# boat and trailer without any problems.
Hello all;
Other than felling a little top heavy at first, you should be fine. You will get used to the feeling fairly quickly. Just think about this before you enter a sharp corner.
Is it a pop up or standard camper, I will echo the tie down warning. Good tie downs mean piece of mind. Make sure you don't have a bedliner, the camper slides REAL easy with that in. Depending on the style you might need to Y the trailer plug to light the camper and trailer. I have a 2000 pound camper and my truck felt kinda rocky around corners until I added air shocks.
Oh wow, does this bring back the memories. I had a 1979 F-250, with a 8' Lance. I towed, an older Ski Nautique. Man what a way to raise kids. Getting them outta town, camping, boating. And yes I fished out of my Nautique.
