Hello, I have a 91 F250, 4x4, 5.8L and sometimes the tranny seems to hunt and I assume it will get worse. Tranny r&r goes for about 2,500 dollars (thru Ford's RMP Power Trains Solutions vendor) in my area so I started looking for another truck. I am the third owner and believe the tranny has aproximately 150k on it. I don't tow but the previous owner did plow with it.
Can I hear from some others as to how long they got out of their E40d as the 95 F250, 4x4 , 5.8L I am looking at has one also. I know it depends upon towing, driving conditions, maintenance, normal wear and tear, but I am just trying to get some ballpark numbers here so I can get a feel for average length on this tranny.
Thanks so much and would love to hear from some tranny experts who work on these daily.
There is a durability difference in pre 95 vs post 95. Prior to 95 the E4OD had some weak spots. The tranny shop I used on my 94 said the torque converter was the biggest problem especially with diesels. Also the Sun Shell was a weak spot.
My 94 F250 SUpercab, Longbed, E4OD 4x4 4.10 460gas needed a rebuild at about 50K miles. I bought it used at 36K and don't know the history. I towed a 24 foot trailer and stupidly did not check fluid and let it get low. Overheated the fluid which caused the tranny to shift hard on an intermittant basis and had Torque Shudder. Rebuild, I think in 97 or 8, was about $2500 with new uprated converter, uprated pump, clutches and heavy duty Sunshell I told him to make it "Bullet proof" for towing my new 30 foot trailer.
So far I have about 43K on the rebuild and I tow maybe 20-30% of those miles. I tow thru really long steep hills in 100+ temps and below freezing.
I appreciate the insight. Were those Ford parts that you upgraded to or aftermarket? If aftermarket do you remember the brand names
That was so far back I have no clue now.
All I remember is he said he used all the new specification uprated components. As mentioned the converter was a weak spot which will cause other problems as it fails. So he definitely recommeneded that.
The Sunshell I bet is an aftermarket brand. That shop likes to use heavy duty sunshells from one company but I forget who it was. On my chebby he used something called the Beast Sunshell if that is of any help. DOn't know if thjey make one for Ford. Sounds like many companies make uprated heavy duty components.
