Okay i bought my 05 screw about 2 months ago. Love the truck but the mileage is not acceptable. I pulled 2 quads down to the lake and burned half a tank of fuel. I went 231km and burnt 53l of fuel. I think that works out to something like 10mpg. I realize that the truck is fairly big but come on. It's an fx4 with 3.73 gears 285/75r18 tires and a 5.4L. Is this all i can expect from this truck? I was told the truck has 300hp but after pulling what i would consider to be a light load these engines don't make anything close to 300. I don't want to sell the truck but my old 78 ford 4x4 get's the same mileage. Does the edge tuner help? What about exhaust system's like with a good set of header's. I have heard that the new trucks seem to shift better and throttle response has been improved. Can anyone verify this as i would like to reflash my ecm to new spec's if posible. If i can't get the mileage up i might have to go back to a gm product.
Just filled up and checked---- 442.5 and 28 gallons = 15.8 unloaded, 70% highway, 80 miles a day round trip. using A/C sparingly. 90 octane blended fuel. average speed on highway=60mph. I'm not exactly easy on the skinny pedal, but, hey, a man's gotta have some fun with his truck.
I don't get why there seems to be such a large difference between reported mileage on these trucks. I average 17.6 since new, and the only tank I have gotten less than 17 on was the first. Even on tanks when I have to haul a lot of materials (1500-1600 lbs.) or have ladders and lumber on the racks or pull a trailer I get better than 17, all hand calculated (I'm a geek and have every gas purchase on a spreadsheet). I would be p!$$ed if I got 15 or less all the time!
I think a lot of difference in the fuel mileage is the part just below the drivers's ankle. No matter how I drive, my wife gets better mileage driving the same vehicle.
I have never ever broken 15mpg highway on my 04 scab and have owned it since new. Have driven it easy, have driven it like it stold it, made very little difference. Have had multiple dealerships check it out, they say nothing is wrong. I now have a Diablo predator turner on it, mileage got a few 10th's better but that's it. At least now its drivable, throttle lag from the factory was horrible. These trucks are very heavy and I think that hurts mpg. Also mine in first year production and is a California spec truck which I believe also hurts mileage. But even taking into consideration all the excuses, this is still one underpowered, bad mpg pig of a truck.
My '07 regular cab/4.6 gets mileage in the low twenties I think. When I hit the highway and cruise at about 70 miles man I get awesome mileage. My 98 supercab was like that too. Cruise at seventy and watch the mpg climb. The engine must run more efficiently at that rpm or somethin'. If you sell your truck...i'll buy it off you! lol!
This may be a strange question but how black is your tailpipe? I saw another truck in the shop today that had over 80k and the tailpipe was clean like new. My truck 's tailpipe is soild black like it's over fueling. I swapped out the maf sensor's to see if it would change anything. If these truck's are very heavy maybe a cam swap would help in the torque department. Does anyone have a dyno sheet on the stock power curve. If these engine's are a rever maybe cruiseing them at 1800rpm down the highway is going to hurt milage if they don't make power until something like 3000rpm. i am willing to try a few things before i give up and sell the truck. I simply can't afford to daily drive a new truck that only get's 10-13mpg.

It's called the human factor. Everyone drives differently, and does different things with thier vehicle. Granted, some of the difference is driving conditions, altitude, possibbly air quality, and different combinations of intown and highway driving.
I didn't buy my truck for gas mileage, I bought it for the utility and the ability to do what I want when I want to, hual, tow, transport, off-road, (all to a certain degree of course). Mine is mostly a daily driver, still cheaper than buying a little car to use, and paying more insurance, license fees, maintance.
5.4L. xlt 4x4. Just take it easy with your right foot.
I do, and drive the same route 5 days a week to work. Road construciton has even slowed me down to 45 for the last two weeks. 1200rpm for 30 minutes of a 40 minute drive. 15.8mpgs same two weeks in a row.
Our 05 FX4 screw gets good milage out on the highway, like around 20mpg (at about 110KMH). But around town it gets 10mpg. My wife drives it mostly. When I have driven it I noticed that it idles a little rough evey once in awhile, and even sometimes doesnt like to start. just about every time its started there is a cloud of fuel out the tailpipe. Definetly has an overfueling problem under certain conditions. Like I said earlier, once warm and out on the highway on a long trip its awsome. Of course the dealer says they cant find a problem. (05, FX4, SCREW, 3.73ls, 18s with 265-65 bfg AT/KO, and about 70,000kms.) hopefully nothing the whipple SC and some good dyno/computer tuning cant fix. (future mod)

Leroy78, I can sympathize. Last winter i trailered from Sudbury to Mattawa about the same distance and i used pretty much the same amout of fuel. I was not very impressed - two sleds, gear and a trailer (plus my brother-in-law) is not a that much weight. I have a 4.6 with 3.73 gears. Maybe this year we'll use my brother-in-laws GM.
