I just got the dreaded "blew a spark plug" call from the dealership. $3,300 to replace the head or $4,980 for a new motor.
I do most of the work on my truck but I've never tackled a job like changing a head. For those that have done it...how difficult would this be for a weekend mechanic? I assume I can get some detailed reference materials on the job from Chiltons or one of the other outfits.
Check into timesert. You can do it with the head on and they last. Helicoils won't last. I've known several people that have used them with no problems, we put one in my father in laws 5.4 because it blew a plug out.
I've pulled the heads a couple of times in my life and I'd advise against you doing it. I'm not suggesting a thing about your abilities or tools/equipment.
I do know if you haven't pulled the heads off this particular motor before (and a few times at that) that you will meet a steady stream of "gotchas" resulting in 1 delay after another.
Now if you are retired, don't need the vehicle any time soon, etc. then the story may be a little different for you.
