rear end woes...
The rear end sounds like a chainsaw when you let off the gas at any speed about 30 or so miles per hour... Back when I first bought the truck I knew the driveshaft was "loose" (it takes a moment rolling over, when you change from reverse to drive...) and sometimes you can hear it kind of, I don't know, grip, or jerk, when you hit the let off the gas and get back on it, especially at high speeds... I also knew when I bought it something was up with the u-joints, and I think they need to be replaced, you can hear it "knock" back into place once in a while, like at a stop sign when taking off...
Also noticed the other day some of the sealant around the differential had come off, which makes me wonder if the grinding/chainsaw noise isin't coming because all the differential fluid leaked out?
Anybody know which one of these components I should go about checking first?
Thanks, and yeah, I know... I'm new at this...
Even though the diff may seem like it's leaking it's probably just seeping. Pic? And I'm sorry to say but your gears sound like they may be toast. I'm not sure how in depth you want to go, but you'd have a much better idea of their condition if you pull the rear cover off.
