[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Jul-02 AT 11:16 PM (EST)] Looking at buying a set of the Edelbrock FE heads. Now my question is: should I buy them preassembled, or get them bare and use different valve springs ect. If I were to buy them bare I wouldn't know wheather I'd be improving on the preassembled heads or just making things worse. This motor is a project so im not too worried about it costing some money. All suggestions are welcome.
From what I've seen, the Edelbrock heads
aren't that much of an improvement over the
stock heads, but for ease of installation, I'd
go with the assembled heads.

This has been discussed at length on a different forum and the general agreement is that they should be bought bare and then preped from there. If you looking for every bit of performance that they can offer, this would be the way to go.
the springs aren't matched to your cam. Most cams want a specific spring rate and the valves are nothing special, you can get them most places in the size you want.
Most have said the the Ed heads need some clean up work before you install them. You might consider doing the clean up yourself or having someone do a light port for you. Just make sure they understand the FE engines and if they don't ask specific questions about your cam, intake, exhaust, rpm target, then find someone else.
If your rpm useage is < 5500, you can probably just check the valve job and run with the ready made ones.
You should also check into the torque specs on the bolts and what bolts to use, I've heard of several people having trouble with bolts bottoming out or over torquing and ruining the helicoils.
Appreciate the heads-up on the other post. I will be running the heads with a edel intake, ross pistons, crower street roller (280-R) 8620 Steel Billet cam (http://www.crower.com/cgi-bin/detail.cgi?prod_id=16462&go.x=11&go.y=9), 428 cj crank, and a Holley 770 street avenger in my 410. Considering an MSD electronic ignition, and still looking for connecting rods
Thanks,
Brian
