ive just finished rebuilding a 360 and it now has 1000 miles on it it runs great and strong no probs what-so-ever but i do have a ticking sound in the engine its not to loud when its cold but after it gets warmed up it starts to "tick" "tick" "tick" "tick" etc it loudest at idle and it seems to quiet down a little after speeding up but that could just be from the engine noise increasing do to RPM or what not but anyway ive talked to someone and he insists that thats how FEs are and that the soud will always be the same and never change i did use used rocker train which i got for a mear $20 i just want to know what you guys think any of you with the same thing? its obviously not that bad if 1000 mile of strong running hasnt effected it rith? anyway enough rabling just tell me your thoughts:-)
I have the ticking noise, I think it has been there all the 10 000
miles ive used the truck, thanks to straight pipes the noise is gone,
I did a 1/4 mile on the weekend at 16 flat with tire spin and a slow
shift into 3rd,then went out and burned tires down to the belts for
a couple hours and it still runs good or better.. I think it's just
a natural noise or something along those lines. lifters make
ticking noises, that might be my problem but who cares, it runs
and doesnt crap out on me ever,so im happy, except it is kinda annoying
I have had a 390 built for my 74' that after 400 miles started the ticking that you are talking about. I talked to my engine builders, and they believe I have a bad lifter. havent had time to deal with it yet, but my noise is gone at first start and after running for a long time (1hour or so) the noise appears. the hotter the oil gets, the worse the noise.
It sounds like you have 1 bad lifter. It may run ok for the rest of your life, but when rebuilding any engine, a new cam and lifter kit is only about $150 and should always be used.
All FE's do not make this noise, I have a 250K+ mile one that is quiet.
It could even be what they call *Exhaust pop* There is a tiny leak in the manifold/pipe or manifold to head the resulting noise sounds just like lifter tick.
I have the same noise in my 360. I believe it is a leak in the exhaust. I've gotten two opinions and one guy said it was a leak and the other said all FE engines make that noise. I'm not really worried about it as long as it doesn't crap out on me.
