This is my first post and my first 400 motor. I just got an 79 f250 with a 400. it is bone stock with a 2 barrel carb. and has all the smog stuff on it. what are some simple mods to do? And can I scrap all the smog stuff. I don't need emissions here. i was thinking about new intake 4 barrel, headers dual exaust, and new air cleaner to get some more air in there.
I have a 79 with a 400 too and i got rid of all the smog stuff (mine only had EGR) put on a 4 barrel carb and dual exhaust, hope to get the headers soon and wow just the carb and intake made it a diffrent truck but the perivious owner got to mine had a 272 degree cam and the carb was off an 84 302 so it was pretty sickly to start with. I have to run the distributor with out the vacume advance now that the EGR is gone but other than getting the timing right it should be a pretty strait forward project, I would go for low end tourqe these motors make power down low and don't really like RPMs in stock form.

Nothing wrong with keeping the EGR system if it works. It will help you run higher ignition timing, thus a little more power. Intake, carb, exhaust headers; YES.
I would also run a closed element air cleaner with ducted outside air, but that's just my opinion. Run a cam with more exhaust duration for these heads. A future upgrade might be some Aussie 302C quench heads.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
