weird noise

I just purchased a 2002 f-350 7.3l turbo diesel. It's my first diesel so I have a question. I was towing my trailer home from camping, the engine temp was about half way, when all of the sudden it soundes like an electric fan started running. As far as I can tell it doesn't have an electric fan, unless for the intercooler, but I souldn't see the intercooler, but it lasted for about 1min. then stopped and came on again about 3-5 min later. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Sounds like your clutch fan is engaging to keep the engine cool under the towing situation which would increase your rad temp.
