I have a 78 bronco that is about too need a newer sound system. I would like to have 6 speakers and 2 subs. the 2 subs behind the rear seat 2 speakers in the front doors 2 in front of the rear seat and 2 behind the rear seat. I want it to sound good while I am driving, but be able to turn it up when I am out of the truck and it still sound good. I know nothing about amps and watts and ohms and what not, and I dot want to spend a lot a lot of money if I dont have to.
What's your budget and what is your goal (sound quality or SPL)?
Are you installing it or will you need someone to install it for you?
Do you have or need an aftermarket head unit?
Are the speakers being installed in the factory locations?
What size speakers?
I going to to the work, I have made my own door, and rear pannels so I can put the speakers where i want. I am looking for somthing loud but still sounds good, and am thinking about a pioneer head unit.
I was told by the local stereo guy 2000 for a complete system installed. I wish I had that kind of money to spend on it but I dont, I thought maybe 500 - 700?!?!?!
You're not going to get much for that amount of money. The stereo shop quoted you about right. However you could probably get better gear for the money if you purchased it on your own.
For a good sounding system you're looking at about $1700 easy. Sacrificing the middle 2 speakers will save you about $250. Again this is for "good" sounding speakers and quality amps. You could get all of this for your budget of $500-700, but don't expect good sound quality.
Head Unit: $200
Front Speakers: $100
Mid Speakers: $100
Rear Speakers: $100
2 Subs: $300-$400
Sub Enclosure: $100 ($40ish if you build it yourself)
4 Channel Amp (Mid & Rear Speakers): $250
2 Channel Amp (Front Speakers): $150
2 Channel Amp (2 Subs): $250
Wiring & Cables: $150
^You can cut that price almost in half if you shop on the Internet.
True, and you can cut the price in half by shopping at a Wal-Mart. But if he wants something that sounds good and is building a complete system w/ 6 speakers & 2 subs + amps & head unit, those prices are pretty average for shopping on the internet. Those prices are also from buying from authorized dealers. Buying from non-authorized dealers will save you some $$ but if you get a bad set of speakers or something blows up, you're pretty much S.O.L. as you won't have any warranty coverage.
As for speaker size: for your 6 speakers, I'd go with some 5.25" components up front, and 6.5" components for the mid/rear sets. Subs.. depends on what kind of music you listen to... if you listen to mostly rock go with 2 10"s. If you listen to some rap, 2 12"s will satisfy you more.
Hit up caraudio.com's forums. There's a lot of info there and if you ask over there you will get quite a few people recommending different brands.
first off, you dont need an amp for each set of speakers. A properly matched head unit will power most door speakers just fine. The front stock size is a 6.5. A decent head unit matched with good door speakers, and a good set of 6x9s in the rear will cover the mids and highs just fine. Combine that with a good set of 12's in a properly matched box and sized amp will definitly cover the lows, especially in a bronco which has very good accoustics imho. I've really played around with all of this......

God I miss my '78! I kick myself everyday for selling it, but it was 15 years ago under the advice of my parents.. I had it when I was in high school and had 4 10's in there. It sounded like crap but it was high school so as long as it thumped, that's all that mattered! ha ha. Nowadays, I'm content with my 1 JL Audio 10 (granted there's about 400 watts running through it)...
Anyways, sounds like pricing is the real issue so if you can power the speakers from the head unit, get a small amp and even 1 sub, it'll sound pretty good. You just don't want to get too big of an amp to power the sub or it'll drown out your mids/high's. You could turn the gain on the amp down but at that point, you're wasting your money on a big amp that you're not even utilizing.
Running the front stage from the headunit is an "ok" method of doing it. But don't expect it to be loud outside the truck. At least not loud AND quality sound. The way I look at it, if you're going to do it, do it right. Save up some more $ or buy it one piece at a time.
Sorry to burst your bubble riggz, but with a cheapo set of sony 6.5's in the front, and a nice set of blaukpunt 6x9's in the rear, it was plenty loud outside of my bronco, even with the top on and just the back window down. Plus, I just left about 5 feet of speaker wire coiled under the 6x9's so I could just grab the boxes and throw them up on top of the top. Used this thing for camping ALOT, and trust me, this system got USED
