Hi everyone. I am in the process of putting my rebuilt 360 back together and I seem to have run into a problem. By following the instructions in my Ford shop manual, I put the timing chain cover, spacer, and harmonic balancer on. The harmonic balancer seems to not go totally on... there is about 1/8" remaining... but it won't go further. I am not sure if that is normal or not. Here is where my dilemma lies:
When I put the pulley on the harmonic balancer and the pulley on the water pump, they don't seem to line up. They are almost 1/4" off! The pulley on the harmonic balancer seems to be IN too far even though it looks like it could go in another 1/8" inch. I will take some snap shots of the alignment tonight. Did I do something wrong? Am I missing something?? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... thanks!
Well, if you are talking about the spacer that is about 2 or 2 1/2 inches long, then yes it is on. It is fully seated against the timing gear. The balancer is on after that... but it seems like its too far in... as though it has to stick out further or the water pump has to come in closer to the block.
I seem to remember that if you put the crank timing chain pulley on backwards, you will be off by 1/4", but you should be able to see your mistake from the side. It has a bevel on the inside on one side.
Strangest thing happened last night... tried it again and the pulley's lined up perfectly. I have no idea why they didn't the other night, but now I can sleep better. Im getting close to getting the motor in!
